May Around the World: Celebrations, History, and LearningMay is a month filled with meaningful celebrations, cultural traditions, and opportunities for children to explore the world
The month begins with International Workers' Day, recognizing the contributions of workers around the world. Soon after, families celebrate Mother's Day, observed in Canada, the United States, and across Latin America. In countries like Peru, this day is especially meaningful, with families gathering to honor mothers and caregivers. On May 12, International Nurses Day highlights the important role nurses play in caring for people, inspired by the legacy of Florence Nightingale. In Canada, Victoria Day celebrates Queen Victoria and marks the unofficial beginning of summer. In the United States, Memorial Day honors those who lost their lives in military service. May is also a wonderful time to introduce children to influential historical figures. Artists like Salvador Dalí inspire creativity, while thinkers such as Karl Marx and Sigmund Freud help us understand ideas that shaped the modern world. Cultural celebrations like Cinco de Mayo and global observances such as World Bee Day provide meaningful ways for children to learn about diversity, gratitude, and caring for others and our planet. At Emma’s Place, we believe May is a perfect opportunity to connect learning with real-world celebrations through engaging activities, videos, and printables designed especially for children.
