There is something wonderful about the way children experience nature. E. E. Cummings,
A puddle is not simply a puddle. It can become a place to jump, splash, explore, and discover. Mud is not something to avoid; it can become part of a game, an experiment, or a new adventure. When I read E. E. Cummings' words, “The world is mud-luscious and puddle-wonderful,” I think about the importance of allowing children to experience the wonders of nature through play. Nature does not always have to be perfect, clean, or carefully organized to be beautiful. Sometimes its greatest treasures are found in the simplest things—a puddle after the rain, wet earth beneath our feet, a leaf floating on water, or the little discoveries we make while exploring outside. For children, these experiences are opportunities to wonder and discover. They can touch, observe, experiment, and simply enjoy being part of the natural world. Play allows children to experience nature in their own way. A puddle can invite curiosity. Mud can inspire creativity. A walk can turn into an adventure. Perhaps this is what makes the world “mud-luscious and puddle-wonderful.” It reminds us that wonder can be found everywhere when we take the time to look, explore, and experience the world around us. Sometimes, we just need to let children get a little muddy.
